What do Volvo Penta mean by exchange parts?

Originally “exchange” parts were remanufactured parts that Volvo Penta remanufactured
using returned parts.

Over the last couple of years Volvo Penta has not been doing very much remanufacturing
and instead has supplied new units as “exchange” units while still collecting the cores so that
Volvo Penta has core units to use to re-start the remanufacturing process.

An “exchange” part and a new part are then identical and both come with the same
one year warranty.

So in this case part number 3801714 which is a lower IPS unit (1.94:1) is mostly
likely a new unit that has been designated as an “Exchange” unit.   And the 3804714
is the refundable core unit amount.

When you purchase 3801714 for $10,122.93 you will also have to pay $4,000 for the
core charge (under 3804717).

The core charge of $4,000 is refunded to you once we receive your old IPS lower
unit back to Marine Parts Express.   We do a fair amount of paperwork and send the
lower unit back to Volvo Penta for their exchange program.
